Objective:

The concept of this project is to use frustules (diatom skeletons) in the masking step of the etching of nanocomposites.  We will be coating 22mm X 22mm glass slides with styrene and then coating the slides again with diatoms.  We are using styrene in place of other possible materials due to the equipment available to us.  Next, they will be run through the plasma etcher which will give us our nanocomposites.  Our first goal is to get nice, straight etches consistently.  Time permitting, we would like to gain some kind of control over the shapes and patterns of our nanocomposites.
