The purpose of this project is to locate a local, low-cost source of base for use in the production of biodiesel at OSU’s on-campus biodiesel production facility.

In the current development of an on-campus biodiesel production facility, the source of the base needed for the production of biodiesel is unknown. In the scope of this project, it is our goal to find a low-cost product currently available from a local source. Ideally, the product would be the waste product of a local industry to reduce or possibly even eliminate any cost. Once a source is located, the goal is to prove its feasibility of the base via lab-scale production of a final biodiesel product. With regards to schedule, we hope to find a suitable source within the remainder of the term and complete the lab-scale tests by the middle of April. This should provide adequate time to pursue another base source in the case of less than ideal production.
