This class is aimed at those of you who already have some knowledge and
understanding of HCI, and want a chance to explore more about some particular
topic/problem you are working on (HCI related), or wished you'd had some
opportunity/excuse to learn more about.
Building on a basic understanding and appreciation for usability and Human
Computer Interaction, this class invites students to further explore the state
of the art in sub-areas of HCI which is relevant to them. As part of this class
we will identify a set of sub-areas of HCI which have either seen significant
developments in recent years, and/or which are of greatest interest to those
taking the class. Rather than use a fixed textbook, we will rely on recent
conference proceedings and journal publications.
Format:
The class will center around the exploration of a handful of class selected
topics in HCI (subject to instructor approval). The class will require a lot of
reading on your part, but on topics which you have selected, and which should
be of interest to you. You will need to prepare a brief proposal, prepare a
annotated bibliography of the topic, do an in-class presentation of the topic,
and prepare a summary paper in stead of a final.
Prerequisites:
This class is intended for graduate students currently doing research in the
area of HCI or related fields, have previously taken either an undergraduate or
graduate class in basic usability/HCI, or undergraduates who have taken CS352
or equivalent.
Schedule
10/10 Proposals due, 5 minute presentation/discussion
10/12 Marie-Anne Midy: HCI field-work; evaluating the Commentator Information System,
Chandan Sarkar: Privacy & the UI;
10/17 Presentation Skills, 5 min presentations (cont)
10/31 Annotated Bibliography due (Example) (Optional: Eric Betts Bibtex template)
11/23 Thanksgiving Break
11/31 Final report due, debriefing, evaluation
Final report format (no template):
- 15-22 pages, double spaced, not including bibliography or cover sheet
o 12 point times new roman or equivalent, default margins.
- Cover sheet with your name, topic, and date of in-class presentation
- 1-2 page executive summary/abstract
- ~1 page scoping/defining your research area/question
- 1-2 page discussion/future work section, but grounded in rest of paper
- Body of paper to be a review of the important sub-areas of research in your chosen area, the major challenges being worked on, the major achievements/milestones, research methods/paradigms etc.
IMPORTANT!: Reading assignment due before class, session before your presentation, presentation due immediately after your presentation
