various devices to a computer. In medical applications, however, it is required
that any device that is connected to a patient may not have a direct electrical
path to the power line. That is, the device must be “galvanically isolated”. A
regular USB port does not provide this isolation. This project would involve
the design, fabrication and testing of an isolated USB hub that meets the
strictly-defined requirements for medical devices.

Description - The Magnetics Lab is in need of a scientific instrument for characterizing
magnetic materials. You probably know that when a magnet is moved near a coil
of wire, an electric current is induced. This phenomenon is used in a common
laboratory instrument called a Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) to measure
the magnetization of an object as a function of applied field. This project
would involve the design, construction and demonstration of a VSM based on the
large water-cooled electromagnet in the Magnetics Lab. The VSM will have to
meet strict sensitivity and accuracy requirements determined by Doctors Dhagat
and Jander.
