CS 468/568: Fall 2019: Inclusive Design (Tentative) Schedule
This schedule will grow and change throughout the course, so check back regularly, and be sure to hit REFRESH to make sure you have the most recent version.
- Week 0 (9/25): Introduction: What is inclusive design?
- Introduction
- Assignment of temporary teammate (for HW #1 only)
- Week 1 (9/30-...): What are personas, persona lifecycle, how do you design/use them, what do people say about them.
- Read textbook Chapters 1-2.
- Look over Appendix B & C with an eye toward HW #1.
- Monday-Friday: Discussion of project possibilities.
- Monday-Friday: Personas Lifecycle and "Family planning"
- Wed: Review of PRICPE
- Friday: Team skills inventory activity, Project roles.
- HW #1 is due Friday 10/4 electronically via TEACH and printed on paper (one per team) by 9:00 am
- Week 2 (10/7-...): Persona Family Planning, and what does exclusion look like for Your population
- Read Mendez et al. InclusiveMag paper (download from CS 468 AND CS 568 Canvas link
- Read textbook Chapter 3 (Family Planning)
- Monday-Friday: User capabilities and exclusion
- Friday: Psychology behind personas.
- Friday: Project Installment #1 is due Friday electronically via TEACH and printed on paper (one per team) by 9:00 am
- Week 3 (10/14-...): Persona Family Planning, and what does exclusion look like for Your population (cont.)
- Week 4 (10/21-...): Your populations (cont.)
- Continue reading+researching as much as possible about your population and how they come together with the kinds of functionality you're envisioning for them in the software
- Mon: Conception/gestation (cont.)
- Wed: No class (Dr. Burnett is helping the CSforAll community connect with the GenderMag method)
- Fri: 3 more teams explain your populations (@ 10+5 minutes). The teams are: Refugees, Kindergartners, Hearing
- Fri: Project Installment #2 (Family planning) is due electronically via TEACH (one per team) by 5:00 pm
- Give feedback to teams here. (Feedback closes 12:00 noon Fri)
- Conception/gestation.
- Read textbook Chapter 4
- Week 5 (10/28-...): From Research to Personas
- Continue reading+researching as much as possible about your population and how they come together with the kinds of functionality you're envisioning for them in the software
- From affinity diagrams and persona skeletons to Persona Facets to Concepts/Design Remedy Ideas
- Review/refresh: Concepts and Prototypes
- Fri: Project Installment #3 (Conception/gestation) is due hardcopy and electronically via TEACH by class time (9:00 am)
- Week 6 (11/4-...): From Personas to Designs
- Week 7 (11/11-...): From Personas to Designs (cont.)
- Week 8 (11/18-...):
- Week 9 (11/25-...):
- Week 10 (12/2-...): Final project presentations of your term projects and Wrap-Up. Each should be 20 minutes + 5 minutes for QA. Here's the form to give more feedback.
- Mon: Presentations by: Hearing Team, Arthritis Team
- Wed: Presentations by: Downs Team, Autism Team
- Fri: Presentations by: Income Team. Wrap-up.
- Final exam week:
- Tue, 12/10, 6:00pm-7:50pm: Presentations by: Developmental Team, Vision Team, Kindergardeners Team, Refugees Team
- Feedback form closes early morning, Wed 12/11.
- Final versions of everything due via TEACH 12/11, midnight
