The promise of data-driven decision-making is now being recognized broadly and there is growing enthusiasm for the notion of ``Big Data. Organizations make their decisions based on computerized data analyses. Recent scientific discoveries were not possible if not for the programs that help scientists to share and analyze the large volumes of the data generated from scientific experiments. While the promise of Big Data is real -- for example, it is estimated that Google alone contributed 54 billion dollars to the US economy in 2009 -- there is currently a wide gap between its potential and its realization. In this course, you will study and discuss the challenges in exploring and analyzing large-scale data sets.

In addition to the papers posted in the class website, we will refer to the following text books in our discussions in the class. They are free!
