Project Description
High-level Description:
First, pick what interface you will be working on from project ideas below. Then,
- Decide on who are the users.
- Decide on what aspect of the interface you want to critique/find problems in (scope).
- Identify problems with the interface within that scope. Plan for data gathering (e.g.: observations, interviewing etc) and come up with an evaluation plan.
- Come up with a prototype addressing these problems. Create a low fidelity prototype.
- Finally, justify your prototype. A detailed description of how your prototype addresses these problems.
- Grade Distribution: ( your final report will be considered grading)
- Project Proposal - 10%
- Evaluation Plan - 25%
- Evaluation - 20%
- Prototype - 25%
- Presentation - 20%
Project Ideas:
- Better input for ultra mobile (different virtual keyboards)
- Multi-touch gestures (memorability, dexterity)
- Kelley Information System (large-screen awareness system)
- EECS webpage Usability
- Beaversource Usability
- Beaversource Social Networking Enhancements
- Moncle (visualizing privacy in browsing)

Team 3:
Binder-Vitti Tyson, Youm Eugene, Alhashemi Yousef, Khedher Khaled
Team 4:
House Michael, Goman Timothy, Mc Guire-Dale Rob
Detailed Descrtiption:
- Project Proposal: Write a 1-2 page report.
- Name of team members
- Project description
- Brief description of interface you are working on. (screen shots would help)
- Brief description of who the target population is.
- Breif description with screen shots (and/or) scenarios (and/or)drawings of functionalities/features (scope) of the interface you are going to test.
- Evaluation Plan + Data Gathering & Analysis:
- Evaluation Plan: Choose an evaluation plan that best suits your study and explain the plan. Explain why do you think its best suited for your study. Chapter 12 in the text book (& class notes) may give an idea of how to pick an evaluation plan. (you may have to choose combination of evaluation techniques)
- Data Gathering Plan: Once you choose an evaluation plan, you have to plan for data gathering.
- Pick appropriate data gathering techniques.
- Mention all the data gathering techniques you are going to use. Justify, why do you think these are best suited for your study.
- Explain if you met all four key issues in the chapter 7.2. Especially triangulation, explain how you are following triangulation in your plan.
- While gathering data, focus on the functionalities/features of the interface you chose to critique. You are welcome to add features to the list you mentioned in the project proposal.
- Remember the users must be from the user group you mentioned in the project proposal. If you are going to collect data from the users other than your friends, please follow appropriate procedures. Tell them what exactly you are doing? what data you are collecting?. what are you going to do with data?.
- Gather the data as per your plan.
Eg:
- you may want to interview the users and take notes while interviewing.
- you may want to observe the user/s in a controlled environment
- Think-aloud approach(refer text book).
- You may want to do indirect or field observation.
- you may want to preparare a questionaire.
- or appropriate combination techniques.
- Analyse the data. Come up with patters and themes. Use these to identify the problems in the interface.
Explain why do think each problem is significant? why do you think its a usability problem.
- Prototype:
- Come up with a low-fedelity prototype addressing the problems you found in your analysis. You can present your prototype using screen shots (implemented or modified from original sreen shots), drawings(sketching), pictures etc.
- Explain the how your prototype is addressing the problems. You can simply explain using words with appropriate screenshots/images/sketches/tasks.
Deliverables: (Submit thro' Teach Login)
- Project Proposal - Due: Thursday, July 23th midnight.
- Intial Draft of Project report (your progress so far on Evalutaion & Data Colletion) - Due: Friday, August 7th by midnight.
- Write a report of 10 - 15 pages. Mostly report exceeds 15 pages. Its ok if it exceeds 15.
- Include everything in your report, answers to the questions in the description, notes you took, questions and answers you gathered(in questioaires and interviews), your findings(patterns and themes found), screenshots of problems or any other relavent documents.
- Prototype + Final Report( includes all the documents, proposal, data collection, evaluation, prototype)- Due: Friday., August 14th by midnight.
* Structure of the Report: Please feel free to choose/make any structure that is good for presenting your study and results. Font - single spaced. Sumit as PDF
