CS 419/519: Fall 2017: Inclusive Design (Tentative) Schedule
This schedule will grow and change throughout the course, so check back regularly, and be sure to hit REFRESH to make sure you have the most recent version.
- Week 0 (9/20 & 9/22): Introduction: What is inclusive design?
- Week 1 (9/25-9/29): What are personas, persona lifecycle, how do you design/use them, what do people say about them.
- Read textbook Chapters 1-2.
- Look over Appendix B & C with an eye toward HW #1.
- Monday: Personas lifecycle, Assignment of HW #1 temporary team.
- Monday: Discussion of project possibilities.
- Wednesday: Personas Lifecycle and "Family planning", More on project possibilities, how personas fit into PRICPE
- Friday: Team skills inventory activity, Project roles.
- Week 2 (10/2-10/6): Persona Family Planning, and what does exclusion look like for Your population
- HW #1 is due Monday 10/2 electronically via TEACH by 9:00 am
- Mon 10/2: Family planning and Abby
- Wed 10/4: User capabilities and exclusion
- Friday 10/6: Project Installment #1 is due Friday 10/6 electronically via TEACH by 9:00 am
- Read textbook Chapter 3 (Family Planning)
- No class Friday 10/6. Dr. Burnett is keynoting at CCSC Northwest on the inclusive design topic "Getting Gender Biases out of Software".
- Week 3 (10/9-10/13): Persona Family Planning, and what does exclusion look like for Your population (cont.)
- Week 4 (10/16-10/20): Your populations (cont.)
- Week 5 (10/23-10/27): From Research to Personas
- Mon 10/23: Conception/gestation
- Wed 10/25: Why personas work: The psychology behind personas
- Fri 10/27: From affinity diagrams and persona skeletons to Persona Attributes to Concepts/Design Remedy Ideas
- Week 6 (10/30-11/3): From Personas to Designs
- Week 7 (11/6-11/10): From Personas to Designs (cont.)
- Mon 11/6: Midterm exam: will be held in Kearney Hall, room 112. "Open note-card": You can bring two 3x5 notecards in with whatever notes written on them that you want. (Both sides, any font).
- Wed 11/8: Design jam #1 (for your Project Installment #4 materials). Here's the form to give more feedback.
- Th 11/9: Project Installment #4 (Concepts and early partial prototype) is due electronically via TEACH by midnight
- Friday 11/10: University holiday
- Week 8 (11/13-11/17):
- Mon 11/13: Go over midterm exams, discuss "dataflow" problem and "divide and conquer" problems.
- Wed 11/15: GenderMag hands-on session (Reminder: How to run GenderMag).
- Fri 11/17: GenderMag hands-on sessions, cont.
- Week 9 (11/20-11/24):
- Monday 11/20: Design jam #2. Here's the form to give more feedback.
- Monday 11/20: Project Installment #5 (Complete (some parts medium-fi, a snippet or two hi-fi) prototype) is due electronically via TEACH by midnight
- Wed 11/22: Final project presentations of your term projects. Each should be 20 minutes + 5 minutes for QA: Preschoolers, Literacy
- Wed 11/22, 10:00-12:00: Special class with Microsoft UXer!: In this class, we'll do hands-on brainstorming with a Microsoft UXer about an inclusive design topic they want to explore. (This class makes up two cancelled classes from earlier in the term). It will be here in our usual classroom (Bexl 102).
- Fri 11/24: University holiday
- Week 10 (11/27-12/1): Final project presentations of the rest of your term projects, and Wrap-Up. Each should be 20 minutes + 5 minutes for QA.
- Mon 11/27: Presentations by: Senior citizens, Dementia
- Wed 11/29: Presentations by: SES, Elementary aged autistic students
- Fri 12/1: Presentations by: ADHD kids, Visually impaired
- Final versions of everything due via TEACH 12/1, 2:00 pm
